Caravan, Motorhome and Boat TV Aerial Guide
For touring caravans and motorhomes, a directional aerial you aim at the local transmitter will always outperform an omnidirectional one, at the cost of having to point it at every stop and retune. Omnidirectional aerials are convenient and adequate in strong-signal areas but struggle at rural campsites, which is where most people actually use them. Satellite is the more reliable option for touring since the dish always points at the same place in the sky, and automatic domes remove the setup entirely. Boats need a stabilised system because they move at anchor, which rules out ordinary caravan aerials.

The touring problem in one sentence
At home, an aerial is aimed once at one transmitter and left alone. Touring breaks every part of that: the transmitter changes at every site, its direction changes, its channel group changes, its polarisation may change, and you’re frequently parked in a wooded valley chosen for its scenery rather than its radio propagation.
That’s why kit that works fine on a driveway in Surrey disappoints in Snowdonia, and why the honest answer for serious tourers is often satellite.
Terrestrial: omnidirectional vs directional
Omnidirectional aerials — the mushroom, dome and disc types mounted on the roof — receive from all directions at once. No aiming, no thinking, works while moving.
The physics cost is unavoidable: gain comes from directivity, so an aerial that receives equally from everywhere has very little gain in any particular direction. Typically a few dB, against 10–15dB or more for a decent directional. In a strong-signal area that’s fine. At a rural site 40 miles from a main transmitter it often isn’t, and no amount of amplification changes it — see boosters vs amplifiers.
They also receive interference from all directions equally, which makes them more prone to co-channel problems than a directional aerial that can simply be pointed away from the offender.
Directional aerials — the classic status-type raiseable aerials and folding Yagis — deliver real gain and real rejection of unwanted signals. You raise them, rotate them to peak the signal, and retune. Many have a rotating handle inside the van and a signal indicator, so the process takes a couple of minutes.
The rule of thumb: omnidirectional for convenience in good areas; directional if you tour rurally or wild-camp. Some vans carry both.
Portable and window aerials are worth mentioning as the budget option. A small directional aerial on a suction mount or a pole outside the van, positioned by hand, will beat a poor roof-mounted omni surprisingly often — because you can put it where the signal is rather than where the roof is.
Retuning as you travel
This is the part that catches new tourers out. Move to a new site and you’re in a different transmitter’s coverage area, so the TV’s stored channel list is wrong.
Practical points:
- Retune at every new site. Most caravan TVs have a quick-scan option for exactly this. Our retuning guide covers the menu paths by brand.
- Expect three multiplexes, not six, at many rural sites. Campsites are frequently served by relay transmitters carrying only the public service multiplexes, so you get BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 but none of the commercial channels. That’s not a fault with your kit.
- Regional news will follow the transmitter, not your home address.
- Some TVs store multiple channel lists by location, which saves rescanning on regular circuits.
Satellite for touring
Satellite sidesteps the transmitter problem entirely: the satellites sit at a fixed point in the sky at 28.2°E, so once you know where south-east-ish is and have clear sky, you’re aligned the same way at every site in the country.
Manual tripod dish. Cheapest, most fiddly. A dish on a tripod, a satellite finder, and ten minutes of patience per site. Works well, packs small, and is the traditional answer.
Manual crank-up roof dish. A folding dish on the roof, wound up and rotated from inside using a signal meter. A good compromise on price and convenience.
Automatic dome or flat dish. Press a button, it finds the satellite in a minute or two. Expensive — often £1,000–£2,500 installed — and the obvious choice for people who tour a lot and value not thinking about it. Flat panel and dome types are lower-profile and better for height-restricted access.
Considerations specific to vans:
- Obstruction. You need clear sky to the south-east. Trees are the enemy, and shaded pitches are the ones you want in summer, so there’s a genuine conflict here.
- Height. Domes add height. Know your van’s new total before a low bridge or a barrier finds out for you.
- Rain fade applies as it does at home, and a small van dish has less margin than a house dish — see does rain affect TV signal.
- Abroad. UK free-to-air satellite footprints are aimed at the UK. Coverage falls away across continental Europe, and the spot-beam channels — including the main BBC and ITV services — become hard or impossible to receive well beyond northern France with a small dish. Do not assume UK television travels with you.
Power: the 12V question
Vans run on 12V DC; houses run on 240V AC. Three consequences:
- Buy a 12V television. A domestic set plus an inverter wastes power converting twice, and inverters are a common source of the electrical interference that ruins reception in a small metal box.
- Check what your amplifier needs. Most caravan aerial amplifiers run on 12V and are switched from a panel inside. If reception dies entirely, check that switch before anything else — it’s the single most common “fault” reported.
- Watch the drain if you’re off-hookup. A TV plus amplifier plus a satellite dome motor is a meaningful load on a leisure battery.
Static caravans and park homes
A static is really a small house with a thin roof, and the domestic answer applies: a proper directional aerial, mounted on a pole and aimed at the local transmitter, will outperform anything designed for touring by a wide margin. Same for satellite — a fixed dish on a pole, aligned once.
Two site-specific points. Many holiday parks have rules about roof fixings and external installations, and some provide a communal system that you’re expected to use. Check the licence agreement before drilling anything. And where a park does provide a communal feed, faults with it are the park operator’s responsibility, not yours.
Boats
Boats add a problem caravans don’t have: they move. A vessel swings at anchor and rolls at sea, so a fixed directional aerial or dish loses alignment continuously.
- Terrestrial: omnidirectional marine aerials are the norm, since directivity is useless on a moving platform. Reception is generally decent in coastal waters and estuaries, and there’s a bonus — over water, propagation is excellent, and tropospheric ducting frequently delivers distant transmitters at strengths you’d never see inland.
- Satellite: needs a stabilised, self-tracking dome with gyroscopic compensation. These are considerably more expensive than caravan domes and are a specialist marine fit.
- Corrosion: marine-grade stainless fittings and properly sealed connections aren’t optional. Salt air destroys ordinary aerial hardware quickly.
- Mounting height helps for the same reason it does ashore, but adds weight aloft — a stability consideration on smaller vessels.
Streaming: increasingly the pragmatic answer
Worth saying plainly, because for many tourers it’s now the best option. Mobile data coverage at UK campsites is often better than terrestrial television coverage, and a 4G/5G router plus a streaming service or Freely avoids the whole aiming-and-retuning cycle.
The trade-offs are real: data cost, coverage that’s genuinely poor in the remotest places (which are frequently where you want to be), and no service at all in a true not-spot. Many vans now carry both — an aerial for when there’s no signal, a router for when there’s no transmitter. It’s a sensible belt-and-braces arrangement given how little either costs to have alongside the other.
