TV Wall Mounting by Wall Type: Plasterboard, Brick, Dot-and-Dab and Stud

The bracket is almost never the problem — the wall is. Solid brick or block will hold any domestic TV on appropriate sleeve or frame anchors. Timber stud walls are fine provided the bracket is fixed into the studs themselves, not the plasterboard between them. Dot-and-dab is the one that catches people out: plasterboard stuck to blockwork with adhesive dabs, leaving a void behind, where a fixing into the board alone will eventually pull out and take the TV with it — the fixing must reach through to the masonry behind.

First, identify your wall

Before any bracket is chosen, work out what you’re drilling into. Knock on it and look at the response:

A £15 detector that finds studs, live cables and pipes is worth owning before you drill anything. Cables generally run vertically and horizontally from sockets and switches — the zones directly above, below and to the side of a socket are exactly where you shouldn’t be putting a 60mm anchor.

Solid brick and block: the easy case

A solid masonry wall will hold essentially any domestic television. Use the bracket manufacturer’s fixings if supplied and rated, otherwise M8 or M10 sleeve anchors or frame fixings into properly-sized holes, hammer-drilled, dust blown out. Do not rely on brown plastic wall plugs and woodscrews for anything above a small TV — they’re fine for a picture frame, marginal for 25kg of television on a cantilevered arm.

Two details that matter: fix into the brick, not the mortar where you can (mortar is much weaker, and old lime mortar especially so), and if the wall is aerated block, use the fixings designed for it. Aerated block is deceptively soft; standard anchors can spin out under load. Manufacturers make specific aerated-block anchors, and they cost very little.

Timber stud: fix into the timber

A stud wall is plasterboard over vertical timbers, usually at 400mm or 600mm centres. The plasterboard itself carries no meaningful load. Done properly, this is a strong mount — the bracket is bolted through into solid timber with coach screws — but it requires the bracket’s fixing holes to line up with the studs, and studs rarely land exactly where you want the TV.

The professional answer where they don’t line up is a timber batten or steel plate spanning two or more studs, fixed securely into both, with the bracket mounted onto that. It’s an extra step, it’s often hidden behind the TV anyway, and it turns an awkward mount into a solid one. Beware “solutions” that involve heavy-duty plasterboard anchors as a substitute for hitting a stud on a large TV — plasterboard fixings have real load ratings, but those ratings assume shear, not the pull-out force a full-motion arm generates when the TV is swung out.

Dot-and-dab: the one that fails

Dot-and-dab (properly, “drylining on adhesive dabs”) is plasterboard fixed to a masonry wall with blobs of adhesive, leaving a void of roughly 10–40mm between board and blockwork. It’s been standard in UK construction and refurbishment for decades, and it’s behind most of the horror stories.

The failure mode is straightforward. A fixing anchored only in the plasterboard has a thin sheet of gypsum resisting the entire load. It may hold for months. Then the board crumbles around the fixing, the bracket tilts, and the TV comes off the wall — often taking a chunk of the wall with it.

Done correctly, the fixing passes through the board, through the void, and into the blockwork behind, with enough embedment in the masonry to develop full strength. That means:

  • Longer anchors than the bracket’s supplied fixings — commonly 100–140mm rather than 60mm
  • Fixings that don’t expand inside the void (a sleeve anchor that expands in the gap does nothing)
  • Not overtightening, which crushes the plasterboard and dishes the wall around the bracket

Where the void is large, installers fit rigid spacers or tubes through the cavity so the bracket bears against something solid rather than compressing the board. If a quote for a dot-and-dab wall specifies through-fixing to the masonry, that’s a sign of someone who has done this before.

Choosing the bracket

Three types, in rising order of price and complexity:

  • Fixed / flat. Holds the TV close to the wall (often 20–35mm). Cheapest, strongest, lowest visual impact — and no access behind for cables once fitted, which is why the cabling has to be planned first.
  • Tilting. Allows a few degrees of downward tilt, useful when the TV sits higher than eye level.
  • Full-motion / cantilever. Swings out and rotates. Much the most useful in awkward rooms and much the most demanding on the wall: an extended arm multiplies the pull-out force at the top fixings considerably. Full-motion on dot-and-dab without through-fixing is asking for trouble.

Match the bracket’s VESA pattern (the standardised spacing of the four mounting holes on the back of the TV, in millimetres — e.g. 400×400) and its weight rating to your set. Both are printed in the TV’s manual and on the bracket’s box. Give yourself margin on the weight rating; a bracket rated at exactly your TV’s weight is a bracket at its limit.

Height, and the fireplace question

The comfortable viewing position puts the centre of the screen at roughly seated eye level — for most people 100–125cm from the floor, which is lower than instinct suggests and much lower than most TVs end up.

Mounting above a fireplace is popular and usually a compromise. Two real issues: the viewing angle forces your neck up for hours at a time, and heat rises. A working open fire or a stove can push temperatures above what the panel and its electronics are rated for. If it has to go above a fire, check the mantel projection and actual temperatures at the mounting position before committing, and favour a tilting or pull-down bracket.

Cables, and doing it once

The difference between a tidy job and an obvious one is cable management. The options, best first:

  1. Chased into the wall with a proper conduit and faceplates top and bottom. Neatest, permanent, requires making good and redecorating.
  2. Fed through the void — easy on stud and dot-and-dab walls, since there’s already a cavity.
  3. Surface trunking, painted to match. Honest, cheap, visible.

Plan the sockets before the bracket goes up: you want mains and aerial/HDMI emerging behind the TV, not to one side. And while the wall is open, this is the moment to run a spare HDMI and an aerial point if there’s any chance you’ll want them.

Regulations note: mains cable should not simply be run inside the wall as flex to a hidden socket. The compliant approaches are a proper fused spur installed by a competent person, or an in-wall rated kit designed for the purpose. This is one of the places where “it works” and “it’s safe and signed off” differ.

Common questions

Can any wall take a TV? Nearly always yes, with the right fixings — including dot-and-dab and stud. The exceptions are walls that are already failing (blown plaster, crumbling mortar, damp-damaged board) and some non-structural partitions. Those need repairing first, not working around.

Can I reuse my old bracket? Often, if the VESA pattern and weight rating suit the new TV and the bracket isn’t bent or corroded. Bring it to the installer’s attention when quoting rather than on the day.

Can a TV be ceiling-mounted? Yes, with a purpose-made ceiling mount fixed into joists — common in kitchens, gyms and commercial settings. It’s a joist-finding job, not a plasterboard job.

What’s the largest TV I can mount? Domestically the wall is rarely the limit; the bracket rating and the fixing method are. Properly through-fixed masonry will hold far more than any consumer television weighs.
