Two TVs From One Aerial: Splitters, Distribution Amplifiers and Extra TV Points

You can run two TVs from one aerial, and the cheapest way is a passive two-way splitter — but every split divides the signal, costing roughly 3.5–4dB per output on a two-way. If your aerial system has signal to spare that's harmless; if it's already marginal, splitting is what tips it into break-up. Where you need three or more outlets, or your signal is borderline, the correct answer is a powered distribution amplifier at the point where the cable enters the house, not a chain of cheap splitters. Satellite is different again: a Sky or Freesat dish cannot be split with an aerial splitter at all.

The arithmetic you can’t argue with

A splitter doesn’t copy a signal, it divides one. Split a signal two ways and each output gets roughly half the power — about 3dB down in theory, and 3.5–4dB in practice once you account for the splitter’s own insertion loss. The numbers stack up faster than most people expect:

Two two-way splitters chained together are not better than one four-way — they’re usually slightly worse, because you pay each unit’s insertion loss twice plus the loss of the cable between them.

Whether that matters depends entirely on how much headroom you started with. A strong installation off a main transmitter like Crystal Palace or Winter Hill may be sitting comfortably above the minimum, in which case losing 4dB is invisible. A marginal loft aerial in a fringe area may have no headroom at all, in which case a splitter is the difference between a picture and a blank screen. Passive splitter: when it’s the right answer

A passive splitter is a small metal box with one input and two or more outputs, no power, and a price around £5–£15 for a decent screened one. It is the right answer when:

  • You need two outlets, occasionally three
  • Your signal has measurable headroom — quality at or near maximum on all six multiplexes, with strength well clear of the bottom of the range
  • The cable runs are short

Buy a fully screened splitter with F-connectors rather than the moulded plastic type with push-fit sockets. The cheap ones leak signal in and out — they’re a common entry point for the impulse interference and 4G/5G noise that causes intermittent break-up. The same logic that applies to coax cable quality applies here: the box costs pennies more and removes a whole class of fault.

One important detail: some splitters are DC-pass on one leg (they let power travel back up the cable to feed a masthead amplifier), and some block DC on all legs. If your system has a masthead amplifier on the pole, you need a splitter that passes DC on the correct output, or the amplifier loses power and the whole system goes dead. Fitting an all-block splitter into a masthead-amplified system is one of the most common DIY own goals in this area.

Distribution amplifier: when you need more

A distribution amplifier is a mains-powered box with one input and typically 2, 4, 6 or 8 outputs, which amplifies the incoming signal enough to cover the splitting loss. Prices run roughly £25–£60 for the unit; expect £90–£180 installed if an engineer supplies and fits it in an accessible location.

It’s the right answer when you need four or more points, when runs are long, or when a passive split has already been tried and failed. But two cautions matter:

It amplifies noise as well as signal. A distribution amplifier makes a weak-but-clean signal usable across several rooms. It cannot rescue a signal that is already noisy or suffering interference — it makes a louder version of the same mess. Position matters more than gain. The amplifier belongs as close as possible to where the downlead enters the property, before any splitting — in the loft, or in an airing cupboard. Amplifying at the far end of a long cable run means amplifying whatever noise the cable picked up along the way. If the signal arriving at the house is genuinely too weak, the fix is a masthead amplifier at the aerial (where the signal is cleanest) or a better aerial, not a bigger box indoors.

What an extra TV point costs

The unit price is a small part of the job. What you’re really paying for is cable, routing and making good:

The spread comes almost entirely from how hard the cable is to hide. A bungalow with an accessible loft and outlets on upstairs walls is quick. A three-storey Victorian terrace with no loft access above the middle floor, solid walls and no existing conduit is slow, and priced accordingly. Two things worth asking for while the engineer is there: a wall plate rather than a dangling flylead (tidier and far more reliable), and a spare run to any room you might use later. Pulling a second cable while the first is being pulled costs a few pounds; coming back to do it costs another call-out.

Satellite is a different problem entirely

None of the above applies to a Sky or Freesat dish. A satellite LNB (the arm on the front of the dish) outputs a signal for one receiver at a time, on a frequency and polarity chosen by that receiver. Put an aerial splitter on a satellite cable and you will get, at best, one working box and one that behaves erratically as the other one changes channel.

The correct solutions are:

  • A multi-output LNB. Quad and octo LNBs provide 4 or 8 fully independent outputs, one per tuner. This is the standard fix for a second Sky or Freesat box.
  • A dSCR / Unicable LNB. Newer single-cable technology that lets several tuners share one cable, each allocated its own slot. This is how modern Sky boxes and most communal systems work.
  • A multiswitch, for larger properties and blocks.

The alternatives worth knowing about

Running a physical cable isn’t the only way to get a picture into a second room, and sometimes it’s the wrong one:

  • A second TV with built-in Freeview and its own aerial point is the simplest, most reliable option where a point already exists.
  • Streaming. If the second room only ever gets casual viewing, a smart TV, Freely, Fire Stick or similar over broadband may serve better than an aerial run — see can you watch TV without an aerial. No cable, no splitting loss, no reception risk.
  • Wireless HDMI senders relay one source to another room. They work, but they add latency, occupy congested 5GHz spectrum and depend on the layout of your house. Treat them as a workaround, not a plan.
  • MoCA adapters carry network data over existing coax. They’re common in the US and used occasionally here for getting Ethernet to a room that already has a TV cable. They don’t distribute a TV signal — they distribute a network — but if your goal is really “streaming in the back bedroom”, they can be a neat answer to a badly-phrased question.

Quick decision guide

  • Two TVs, strong signal, short runs → screened passive two-way splitter. Cheap, reliable, done.
  • Two TVs, marginal signal → measure first. Fix the aerial system before splitting it.
  • Three or more points → distribution amplifier, sited at the incoming downlead.

  • Block of flats → this is a communal system question, not a domestic one.
