Why Won't My TV Aerial Work? Fault-Finding Guide

Most 'aerial not working' faults are not the aerial. Work through the chain in order: confirm the TV is on the right input and has been retuned, then check the flylead and wall plate, then any splitter or amplifier (and its power supply), then rule out weather and transmitter faults by asking neighbours or checking the Freeview website. Only when everything indoors checks out is the aerial itself — damaged, shifted, or corroded — the likely culprit, and that's a job for someone with a ladder and a meter.

Only when everything indoors checks out is the aerial itself — damaged, shifted, or corroded — the likely culprit, and that’s a job for someone with a ladder and a meter.

The golden rule of aerial fault-finding is to start at the television and work backwards towards the roof. Cheap, indoor, five-minute checks come first; ladders come last. The signal chain is short — aerial, cable, maybe a splitter or amplifier, wall plate, flylead, TV — and the fault is in exactly one place. Here’s the order.

Step 1: is the TV even looking at the aerial?

It sounds insulting, but it’s the most common “fault” of all. Modern TVs have many inputs — HDMI 1–4, apps, and the built-in tuner — and “No signal” on screen very often means the TV is sitting on an empty HDMI input, not that the aerial has failed.

Press Source or Input on the remote and select TV, Antenna or DTV (naming varies by brand — it’s the built-in Freeview tuner, whatever your set calls it). If a set-top box does your tuning instead, make sure the TV is on the box’s HDMI input and the box is actually on — standby lights fool people daily.

While you’re in the menus, confirm the tuner is set to Aerial/Terrestrial, not Satellite or Cable, on TVs that offer the choice.

Step 2: retune

If the input is right but there are no channels — or the channel list is empty on a new TV — run a full retune: usually Menu → Settings → Channels → Auto-tune (or “full scan”, not “update scan”). A brand-new TV has never scanned; a TV moved from another house is tuned to the wrong transmitter’s frequencies; and transmitter frequency changes periodically strand old tuning data.

A retune takes five minutes. If it finds all the channels, you’re done. If it finds some channels, that’s a different, well-understood pattern — usually one weak multiplex (MUX — a bundle of channels sharing one frequency) dropping below the tuner’s threshold — covered in Freeview channels missing after retune. If it finds nothing at all, keep going: the tuner is scanning correctly and hearing silence, so the problem is upstream.

Step 3: the flylead and wall plate

The flylead — the short cable from the wall socket to the TV — is the single most failure-prone component in the whole chain, because it’s the one that gets kicked, trapped behind furniture, yanked during hoovering and chewed by pets.

  • Unplug both ends and reseat them firmly. The plug should be fully home in the socket.
  • Inspect the plug ends. On screw-together plugs, the centre pin should be straight and the fine copper braid should not be splayed across the centre conductor — one stray whisker short-circuits the signal.
  • Wiggle-test: with the TV on a channel (or the signal-strength screen open), gently flex the lead near each plug. Picture flickering in time with your wiggling is a verdict.
  • Best of all, swap it for a known-good lead. They cost a few pounds, and it’s the cheapest definitive test in this whole guide.

Give the wall plate a look too. Loose faceplates, corroded contacts, or a cable that’s pulled out of its terminal behind the plate all present as total signal loss. If you’re comfortable, turning off nothing more than your own nerves and unscrewing the faceplate will show whether the coax (the round screened aerial cable — see our coax guide) is still properly connected behind it.

If you can bypass the wall plate — connecting the incoming cable directly to the TV with a coupler — and the picture returns, you’ve found the fault.

Step 4: splitters, amplifiers and their power supplies

If your aerial feeds more than one room, somewhere there’s a splitter (a passive device dividing the signal between outlets) or, more commonly, a distribution amplifier (a powered device that boosts the signal before splitting it — often a small box in the loft with several outputs).

Amplifiers fail, and more often their power supplies fail — or get switched off. The classic case: the amplifier in the loft is powered through a socket or a power-injector unit behind a TV, somebody unplugs it to free a socket, and every TV in the house goes blank simultaneously. That “every room at once” pattern is the amplifier signature.

Checks:

  • Find the amplifier (loft, cupboard, behind a TV) and confirm its power light is on.
  • Check the socket it’s plugged into hasn’t been switched off, and that any masthead amplifier’s power injector (a small inline box that sends power up the coax to an amplifier at the aerial) is plugged in and inline.
  • If you suspect the amplifier itself, bypass it: connect the incoming aerial cable directly to one room’s cable with a coupler. Signal restored in that room means the amplifier or its supply is dead.

Step 5: rule out the outside world

Before blaming the aerial, eliminate the two causes that aren’t on your property at all.

Weather and atmospherics. High pressure can cause distant transmitters to interfere with yours (the picture pixelates or vanishes in fine, still weather — counterintuitive but classic); storms can knock reception about while they pass. Transmitter faults and planned engineering. Transmitters occasionally go off-air or run at reduced power for maintenance. Two quick tests: ask a neighbour whose aerial points the same way whether their TV is out too, and check the Freeview website’s “Is there a problem in my area?” tool with your postcode. The neighbour test is genuinely diagnostic. Neighbours fine, you’re not: the fault is on your property. Neighbours out too: transmitter or (in flats) the communal system.

Step 6: the aerial itself

If everything indoors checks out and the outside world is innocent, the remaining suspects are on the roof:

  • Misalignment. Wind rotates aerials on their masts. An aerial that has swung even 20–30 degrees off its transmitter bearing can drop below usable signal. Compare yours with the neighbours’: if theirs point one way and yours points somewhere else — or at the sky — there’s your answer. (Which way should it point?)
  • Physical damage. Snapped elements, a bent boom, the aerial dangling by its cable. Binoculars from the garden beat a ladder for the first look.
  • Corrosion and water ingress. The slow killer. Water gets into the connection box on the aerial or wicks down inside the coax, corroding the conductors. From the ground this is invisible — the aerial looks fine and is quietly dead. Aerials in typical UK weather have a service life of roughly 10–15 years; corrosion is usually what ends it.
  • Cable damage en route. Coax abraded on a gutter edge, drilled through during unrelated work, or degraded where the outer sheath has cracked with UV and age.
  • It was never right. For new setups that have never worked: contract-grade aerials in weak areas, loft mounting where there isn’t enough signal indoors, wrong polarisation (elements horizontal when the local relay needs vertical), or the wrong aerial group for the transmitter. This is the point where honest advice says stop. Roof work without the right access equipment injures people every year, and diagnosing which rooftop fault you have really needs a signal meter reading at the aerial itself. An installer with a meter can usually pinpoint the fault in under half an hour, and typical repair costs are modest — commonly £80–£150 depending on the job (see TV aerial repair costs).
