Freeview Channels Missing After a Retune: How to Get Them Back

Channels usually go missing after a retune because the automatic scan skipped a weak multiplex or locked onto the wrong transmitter. The fix is a manual tune: look up your transmitter's UHF channel numbers, delete the stored channel list with a first-time installation retune, then add each multiplex by its channel number. If channels still won't hold, the retune has probably exposed an aerial fault rather than caused one.

Why a retune loses channels in the first place

A retune sounds like it should only ever add channels, but the way TV tuners scan makes losing them surprisingly easy. Three causes account for almost every case.

The scan skipped a weak multiplex. Freeview channels travel in multiplexes (MUXes — bundles of channels sharing one UHF frequency). Your transmitter broadcasts six of them, sometimes more, and each one carries a different chunk of the ~75-channel line-up. During an auto-scan the tuner pauses on each frequency for only a second or two. If a MUX is weak at that moment — bad weather, a marginal aerial, interference — the tuner decides there’s nothing there and moves on. Every channel on that MUX vanishes from your list in one go. That’s why people lose whole blocks of channels (all the COM MUX channels like Dave, Yesterday and Film4, say) while BBC and ITV survive: the public service MUXes are broadcast at higher power.

The TV tuned to the wrong transmitter. In many parts of the UK your aerial can pick up two or more transmitters — the one it points at, and a distant one arriving weakly off the side. An auto-scan stores whichever signal it finds first on each frequency, and some TVs helpfully store both sets, then pick the weaker one for the main channel numbers. The result is a channel list that half-works, breaks up in bad weather, or shows the wrong regional news.

You live in a split-region postcode. Areas served by two transmitters in different TV regions — parts of the East Midlands between Belmont and Emley Moor, or the borders between Mendip and Rowridge coverage — routinely end up with a jumbled list after a retune. Some TVs ask which region you want; many just guess.

Auto-tune vs manual tune

An auto-tune (the “retune” or “auto setup” option in your TV’s menu) scans every UHF frequency from channel 21 to 48 and stores what it finds. It’s convenient, but it’s also the thing that caused the problem, and running it again often reproduces the same result.

A manual tune lets you add one multiplex at a time by its UHF channel number (the numbered frequency slot the MUX broadcasts on — nothing to do with the channel numbers on your remote). Because you tell the TV exactly where to look, it can’t wander off to a distant transmitter, and because it dwells on the frequency until you confirm, it will usually lock a MUX the auto-scan skipped.

The menu is usually under Settings → Channels → Manual Tuning (or “Analogue/Digital Manual Scan” on some sets). You enter the UHF channel number, wait for the signal strength and quality bars to settle, and press store. Repeat for each of your transmitter’s six MUXes and the full line-up comes back.

Finding your transmitter’s UHF channel numbers

You need two things: which transmitter your aerial points at, and the UHF channel numbers it uses. When to do a factory reset retune

If your channel list is badly jumbled — duplicates in the 800s, wrong regions on the main numbers, channels that show “no signal” — don’t retune on top of it. Most TVs merge the new scan with the stored list and keep the junk. Instead, run a first-time installation retune (sometimes called “factory reset tuning” or found by re-running the initial setup wizard). This wipes the stored channel database completely before scanning, which clears out old regional variants and stale 800-range duplicates.

A sensible sequence:

  1. First-time installation retune with the aerial unplugged — this empties the list on sets with no explicit reset option.
  2. Plug the aerial back in.
  3. Manual tune each MUX by UHF channel number.

That order guarantees the TV only ever stores your intended transmitter.

Wrong BBC region after a retune

Getting BBC South when you expect BBC West, or Look North from the wrong side of the Pennines, is the classic split-region symptom. It means the scan stored a MUX from a second transmitter and put its regional variant on channel 1, shoving your local version up into the 800s. Some TVs offer a “preferred region” prompt during the scan — pick your actual region, not the strongest signal. When it isn’t a retune problem at all

If a manual tune finds the missing MUX but the quality bar sits low or bounces around, the retune hasn’t lost your channels — it’s revealed that your aerial system is marginal. Corroded coax (the round screened aerial cable), a waterlogged outdoor connection, a shifted aerial or a failing amplifier can all leave a MUX teetering on the edge, where it worked yesterday and fails today’s scan. Retuning repeatedly will just re-roll the dice.

The 700 MHz clearance legacy

Between 2017 and 2020 the 700 MHz band (UHF channels 49–60) was cleared of TV broadcasting and handed to mobile networks, which meant most UK transmitters moved several MUXes to new frequencies. The clearance completed in 2020, but its legacy lingers: TVs that haven’t been retuned since then hold dead frequencies in their channel list, and older instructions found online still quote pre-2020 UHF channel numbers.
